I struggle in a few areas of my life.
- I have difficulty saying no at times
- I tend to jump in without waiting in a conversation regarding something I am passionate about
- I struggle with my eating when I am upset or stressed out
- I have a slow to build (but when I havent processed my emotions for far too long) hot temper which explosively flares then quickly subsides
As I have been pondering the fruit of the Spirit mentioned in Galatians 5:23, I realized its no coincidence that self-control or discipline (depending on your translation) comes last in the list.
I fully believe that if we are already experiencing and seeing God moving in our lives in these areas:
- love
- joy
- peace
- patience
- kindness
- goodness
- faithfulness
- gentleness
- self-control
we will be much more likely to be able to trust He can help us being our areas of weakness under control.
I have firsthand come to understand this vital truth… When I am out of control, I have forgotten to invite God into that moment. I have not handed over my weakness and asked Him to strengthen me there. I have tried to act on my own, and not followed Holy Spirit’s lead.
Self-control begins when we acknowledge our need of Him, and let our desperate need to be in control go as we lean on God.
The times when I have the most self-control occur when I hand God the wheel and seat myself in the passenger seat beside Him.
Self control begins when I lay my self down.
Its amazing how clearer situations appear when I see them through His eyes. I am able to better control my temper, my appetite.and my tongue when I invite and embrace Him to be the strength in my weakness! I am able to keep focused and finish tasks as He empowers me.
In need of more self control? It’s time to let your self go & follow where He leads!
