whose voice are you listening to?

When it comes to the topic of lies, the key on knowing how to tackle them is based upon which voice you are listening to.

Are you lying to yourself?  Whether intentionally or not, this kind of lying is sin, and ends up harming you guessed it, yourself directly.

“What a person plants, he will harvest. The person who plants selfishness, ignoring the needs of others—ignoring God!—harvests a crop of weeds.” Galatians 6:7 MSG

Have you taken on someone else’s lies spoken over you? I shared yesterday that a high school teacher spoke a lie over me which took decades to come out and be broken off of me. The bottom line to that lie, he cursed my femininity and creativity as he spoke his pronouncement over me.  His lie became part of a faulty foundation which God needed to tear down for me to bring me into a place of healing and freedom.

Anyone’s words which do not speak truth over you can harm you if you let them.

Even more harmful is listening to the best liar of all, the enemy.

“He couldn’t stand the truth because there wasn’t a shred of truth in him. When the Liar speaks, he makes it up out of his lying nature and fills the world with lies.” Jesus referring to Satan in the passage found in John 8:44-47 MSG.

All the enemy has left, friend, is his ability to lie.  When Jesus went to the cross, and rose again, He shattered the enemy’s place as the ruler over the earth. Jesus is once again the legal ruler over the world, and will come to restore and rule in His fullness. Satan knows this truth, and continues to use his weapon of lies to harm, lead astray and damage all people, even those who follow God.

Replaying lies is like giving your mind over to an old audio tape or cd playing when you have the ability to turn it off once and for all.  How can we do so? By using the weapons God has given us to shatter the lies we encounter in our lives, and depending on His truth, as outlined in Ephesians 6:11-13, 2 Corinthians 10:5, and John 10:10.

Lies can bind, blind, harm, hinder or cause us to shake in fear. None of this is what God wants for us, friend. Those actions are the direct impact of the enemy using what he can to try and hurt us.

Our job when someone speaks to us is to filter it through the Word, and ask Holy Spirit whether it is truth, or a lie. If it is a lie, we are to speak out against it in the name of Jesus, and refuse to partner with it.

If it is a lie you are telling yourself, ask God to bring into the light whatever is hidden within you that needs to be dealt with, so you can uproot this sin from your life.

“You can’t whitewash your sins and get by with it; you find mercy by admitting and leaving them.” Proverbs 28:13 MSG

If it is a lie someone spoke over you or has been whispering to you in the present, rebuke it in Jesus’ name, speak out loud that you will not agree with it, and for it to go to the foot of the cross.

If it is a lie that a person spoke over you in the past which comes back for instant replays, you need to confess your sin for believing the lie, forgive the speaker of the lie whether they knowingly or unknowingly delivered this lie, and break it off in Jesus’ Name, speaking out loud that you will not partner with this untruth any longer, and invite God to heal and restore the damage this lie has caused within you.

If it is the enemy’s lie you need to tackle, friend? Ask Holy Spirit to guide you as you rebuke the enemy in Jesus’ Name. Just as outlined above, speak out your refusal to listen to his lies, and declare God’s truth in its place.  If you are hearing the enemy say “You are unloved,” then speak out John 3:16 and put your name in place of the world, for you know His love was personal when He went to the cross for your sins.

Jesus reminds us throughout the bible that God’s people hear His voice. In John 10:4 Jesus reassures us that His sheep will know His voice from all others, and will refuse to follow anyone else other than Him.

The more truth we welcome within us through His Word? The more we learn to recognize His voice? The more we will be able to discern the lies which will come against us, and see God give us the victory as we bring them into alignment with His truth, allowing Him to shield and protect us.  A great scripture to speak out daily over yourself proclaiming who He is in your life is Psalm 91. It has helped remind me that I have a friend who is closer than a brother many times, and that He is more than able and willing to battle for my freedom and well being!

May you hear His voice above all the others, and may He continue to reveal truth to shatter the lies you encounter, friend.
