“Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.” (Ephesians 6:17 NIV)
This particular verse was a bit confusing to me the first time I read it. Until I asked God to clarify what He meant by it, so I could take it to heart and apply it as He directs. Then the light went on, and I realized that this verse is literally directional in its bluntness.
I am to daily put on my salvation, and get my head on straight each morning. Reminding myself who I really am – a forgiven, adored, and adopted made royal child of God!
Then I realized that the only physical weapon I have been given to wield against the enemy is also the most powerful of all. The Word of God is the sword I am to use in battle as He guides me.
But I am not to literally strike the enemy myself, but to speak out His Word – all the holy, strong, mighty-ness the Living Word contains. When we wield the Word by speaking Truth, God breaks the power of lies and strongholds, releasing freedom and wholeness in their place. The Living Word does the work when we speak His Word over and into a situation.
Friend, your salvation is sure if you have given your life to God, and are committed to follow His lead. Be sure to wear it as part of your protective gear. And don’t leave home without the Word. Not only do we have unprecedented access to the printed and virtual Word, we have the Living Word dwelling within us 24/7, always. God will bring to mind the right words in the right timing as we look to Him to direct us in our battles.
“Embrace the power of salvation’s full deliverance, like a helmet to protect your thoughts from lies. And take the mighty razor-sharp Spirit-sword of the spoken Word of God.” (Ephesians 6:17 TPT)
