FIRST.
The first thing that comes to mind about being first usually means meeting an internal want or need within. Like, first one who gets to the newly baked cookies gets first dibs. First come, first served.
But Your Kingdom doesn’t work that way.
Jesus said, “‘Love the Lord your God with all your passion and prayer and intelligence.’ This is the most important, the first on any list. But there is a second to set alongside it: ‘Love others as well as you love yourself.’ These two commands are pegs; everything in God’s Law and the Prophets hangs from them.”
Matthew 22:37-40 MSG
The first on my list, in every category, is to be You.
Loving you is to come first.
For not only do You deserve it because of who You are, but it also occurs to me that You have always been the first in Creation.
First come, First served turned about upon its head.
For You know that when we come to You first, we avoid the selfish, sin filled pitfalls we tend to find ourselves in when we put ourselves first.
Yet putting You first was not all You ask of us in these verses in Matthew 22.
You also ask us to love others as well as we love ourselves.
First You, first others, then me. A circle of love that not only first thinks of others before ourselves, but expresses that love first.
First.
- With all my heart, soul and mind (ESV)
- With all my passion, prayer and intelligence (MSG)
- With every passion of my heart, with all the energy of my being, and with every thought that is within you (TPT)
