porsche vs beater: when quality matters

image

Just passed a Porsche in the parking lot on my way to the bus this morning, which jolted my memory back to part of a talk I heard at Kingdom Bound several years ago.

It’s worth revisiting.

We can tend to end up with people based on attraction, can’t we? And jumping to instant conclusions can lead us to settling for a beater when our heart is meant for a Porsche.

God’s heart is set for our best.
Nothing less.

So why do we jump to settle?

Coz we have to wait, and we tend to think we know better when we let our emotions and attractions lead our decision making.

I am gonna take this message, originally about guys & gals, a step further today, and talk about the others we get into bed with.

When you form a partnership or arrangement with a company, church, employer or partnership, you essentially become linked spiritually. Like a marriage.

And if one of you isn’t healthy, you can both become unwell or one of you ends up the other’s punching bag (verbally, emotionally, spiritually..)

We are to be just as careful who we partner with as we are to be wise about choosing our spouse.

I worked for a great organization as a young adult for several years, My last six months there, a new boss was hired who so overloaded the team with her work that we couldn’t get ours done, and then berated us for being lazy. As good as the organization was, it didn’t protect us or allow for complaints up the chain, so the entire team quit within a year.

No one signs up to be treated like crap by their employer. When I met Him, God made it quite clear to me when I was to leave this job.

Several years later, I was working for another well known company. When I started, the company held well-balanced policies to encourage both customer and employee satisfaction. It was a hard job, but one where we all felt supported and encouraged to be our best.

Fast forward a few years to upper management changes, and a new direction for dealing with employees. Not one of encouragement but fear of reprisal. No longer challenged to reach goals, ordered to hit them or else. And the company I thought I was working for revealed its new dark side. Again, God guided me to part ways.

But the silver lining of that departure allowed for me to be hired by a former client who thought I would be a good fit for his small business, and who serves the Lord with no holds barred.

To the world it was a dumb choice, but to the Lord it was the wise choice.

Now my boss would be the first to say he isn’t perfect. but He is relying on the One who is.

And that can make all the difference.

Another former boss I had was not a believer, but believes in pursuing excellence in every detail at work. He was a great boss, and I only left because there was no room to grow. He still models doing his best every day.

Here’s my point.

What looks like a beater on the outside may have the best qualities under the hood.
And sometimes your Porsche has major problems lurking below the surface.

Before you form a partnership, apply for a job, or ask that person you are interested in out on a date, please ask God for His opinion.

First.

And if need be, ask Him to confirm what you think you are hearing.

The Bible is clear on a few things we tend to overlook at times when we are caught up in our emotions:

Don’t throw your pearls before swine.

Your talents are meant to be used where God wants you to use them best, not the enemy’s slop yard.

Also known as….

Don’t leap before you look.

Instead of immediate action, do the hardest thing for yourself in that moment, and wait…

Seek God.
Listen for His voice.
Wait for confirmation.
Then act accordingly.

If you are being pressured in the moment for an immediate answer, answer NO.

If time is of the essence, God will give you the right answer in the right time…His.

Because we can’t always see what is really going on behind the scenes in corporations, in our churches, in our partnerships…

But He can.

He knows each of our hearts, and knows who is the best fit where. (We are part of His body, after all!)

Anything else is settling for second best.

If you are a hard worker, unintentionally accepting a job from a lazy boss will drive you crazy. And God knows it.

Instead of jumping to take the first job you can because you are scared you won’t have enough. ask the God who provides to ensure you have all you need in the wait for the right position yet to come.

He may want you to start your own business, form a new partnership, or work where you never expected you would.

If He is leading you there. He has equipped you to work there.

Let your yes be yes, and your no be no.

Don’t be a yes man at any cost. Ask God for discernment, and reply as He leads. This has been one of the hardest but most precious lessons He has taught me, as I was headed down the road of people pleaser at my own expense. I now pray and wait before I respond, and can tell you there is much blessing to be found in following instead of reacting.

Be careful with whom you end up aligning yourself.

Where our heart is, our treasure is found.

When you give Him your heart, giftedness and willingness to serve where He wants you, you will reap the rewards He has in store for you.

You might think a particular person would be a great business partner, but God knows they are headed down a dangerous road which will negatively impact your business, and you, if you join forces.

Don’t gloss over the details.

The God who sees each and every wildflower He creates, knows each tear we cry, and hair on our heads? He pays attention to the details.

Become informed about the company you are thinking on working for. Check out their website, look up their financial status. Look at the chatter on their social media & advertising campaigns.

Do the same for the church you are thinking about joining, the organization you are interested in volunteering with, and the person who wants to hire you or go into business with you.

You might be surprised what you may learn. But God isn’t.

Quality matters. You reap what you sow.

God didn’t skimp when He made the world or each of us. He did so to the best of His ability.

We are hardwired to do likewise.

That is why being placed where God wants you to do your best is so important, to all three of the people involved….you, your boss/partner, and God.

You because you are blessed when you do your best for Him.

Your boss/partner will reap the blessings of your best for the business.

God will be blessed because you are using the gifts He gave you where He wants you to, for His glory and Kingdom.

Final Thought:

When we allow God to guide us to the best fit for our skills & gifts, He take us out of the boxing ring of impulsiveness where the enemy has been beating on us, and moves us into the wise open spaces of shelter He has waiting for us. There will be storms ahead, but we will be under the cover of His blessing through our obedience.

God has a place for you in heaven. and a place for you here on earth.

May we ask for His wisdom to see what is under the cover of what we can glimpse in the natural, and never fail to allow Him to safely lead us.

I know this is possible. because He has done it for Moses, David, Paul, Ruth, Rahab and so many more whose history you can read in the Word.

If He can do it for those willing to follow, He will do so for you & I, because He never changes!

Here’s to wise choices led by Wisdom Himself.

now covered in Love

I tend to be a hider by nature.

Which only reinforces what we learned about ourselves in the Garden.

When the going gets tough, we try to hide.

This past week, I had a break through while getting quiet in His Presence one morning.    God revealed to me that i had agreed with a lie in a situation where something was done to me, which i thought had been long ago been put to bed & resolved.

God knew otherwise.

It was a sneaky lie, but one that tied me down in my spirit and hindered my desire to communicate openly.  In fact, it caused me to hide away physically & emotionally as well, and God did not want for me to remain hidden in this way.

God sees it all, the beautiful, the sin, the past, the present, the future.

I had stopped embracing some of how i was made, and settled for a layer of invisibility which covered me in both a fear and a lie at the same time.  It essentially tied part of me to the past in a way which hindered my moving forward into the pastures He is leading me towards.

God called me to trade this cloak in for His covering for me instead.

What a delight to wear a garment custom made for me!

There is a layer of invisibility woven into this must wear clothing too, but one I am so grateful to God He gifts to me.

When I remain in this covering garment, I am safe in His stronghold, my spirit invisible to the enemy’s glance.  I have a love & peace secure in knowing I am with the One who adores me, freed me, restores me, protects me & wants me with Him forever.

He can keep me safe under His wing, essentially causing me to become invisible to all but Him.  He Himself becomes my shield as I trust in Him & wear His cover.

Instead of trying to keep myself hidden out of shame, He keeps me hidden in His heart out of love.

If you too have sin or lies hidden away under layers of invisibility you think God isn’t aware of…..you need to think again.

There is nothing we can hide away that He is unaware of.

There is no place we can go where He won’t meet us there.

There is no lie or sin more powerful than the blood of Jesus!

Today, come out of hiding & hide yourself away in the secret place with Him. Ask Him if there is anything you have layered within you that you may not even be aware of, which needs to come out into the light as He makes the invisible visible. Strip off the lies, be cleansed of the sin. Open yourself to His touch, as He uproots, heals & makes you anew in Him.

Less of me hidden away means more of Him coming alive within me!

The 3 ways rest can keep us safe

Did you know that not getting enough rest is bad for you beyond how it affects your body?

There are three key reasons why rest is one of the components to our overall well-being, besides the benefits physically.

1. Rest denies the enemy from affecting our soul.

It appears that rest is one of our main defenses against the enemy.
Resting in God allows Him to be our defender, as outlined in:
Psalm 91

While we rest in Him, He battles for us, and will win:

God of peace will soon crush Satan under your feet.

Romans 16:20 NIV/ESV

Our souls are protected when we rest in God.

2. Rest restricts the emotional attack against us.
When we keep ourselves from becoming anxious, and give things over to God when we are upset or concerned, we align our hearts up with the rest we have in our soul & body.

Are you tired? Worn out? Burned out on religion? Come to me. Get away with me and you’ll recover your life. I’ll show you how to take a real rest. Walk with me and work with me—watch how I do it. Learn the unforced rhythms of grace. I won’t lay anything heavy or ill-fitting on you. Keep company with me and you’ll learn to live freely and lightly.

Matthew 11:28-30

Maintaining our emotional rest not only shields us from the enemy’s attempts to send fiery darts to harm us, it allows us to walk in the rhythms of His grace. Our faith & trust in Him becomes our shield.

3. Rest restrains the mind from speculation.
When we keep our focus on God, and through His Word, worship & time in His Presence, we get to closely know the God we love, we are building a solid foundation of fact in our minds. Knowing His lavish love for us and memorizing His Word are how our mind can find rest through the storms and from the distracted thoughts the enemy likes to subtly shoot our way… “God couldn’t forgive you for that!” “nobody will love you when they hear what you did” etc.
Knowing His Word & resting in the truth contained there is protection for our minds, the helmet of salvation.

Final Thoughts:
God our Warrior battles for us.
Placing our faith & trust in Him helps shield our emotions.
Spending time with Him, our Truth, protects our minds from attack.

Resting in Him, when added to taking care of our bodies by getting enough physical rest, is our strongest defense against the enemy’s schemes.

But more than that, as we get to know God more & more, and draw closer to Him no matter the season we are in, He offers rest that encompasses our whole being as we seek Him every step of every day.

We were never designed to find rest on our own, but through God, who is both the rest we seek & holding out the rest we need for every part of us in His loving hands.

I am not missing out on that offer of all encompassing rest!

label maker

What label are you wearing?

I don’t mean literally like lululemon, Guess or Roots, but rather the sort of labels you associate with yourself, on the inside…

For years, I wore the label victim.
As many who have been physically or emotionally assaulted, or swindled and taken advantage of in any way can relate, you can fall into thinking of yourself as a victim.

Poor me.
Why does this always happen to me?

Or the label someone spoke over you, that you decided to wear because you took their word for it…

Unattractive, ugly, homely.
Loser, dummy, stupid.
Lost cause, black sheep, not worth it.
Weak, poor, failure.
Deserted, abandoned, unwanted.
Broken, beat up,
waste of time.

Although we can all have moments when each of these words could apply, they are and were never meant to define us, or be worn by us.

They are the enemy’s clothing…

Because He knows our true value and worth, he tries to do his best to cover up our true light, our true selves with his mudslinging.

We were never meant to wear anything but God’s intended covering…Himself.

God reminds us over and over in His Word who we really are to Him, when we look at ourselves from His point of view….

His Beloved (Jeremiah 11:3)
Child of God (1 John 3:1)
Heaven’s Poetry (Ephesians 2:10)
Whole in Christ (Colossians 2:10)
Forgiven (1 Peter 2:24)
Never Alone (Deuteronomy 31:8)
An Exquisite Fragrance (2 Corinthians 2:15)
Free (Galatians 5:1)
God’s Workmanship (Ephesians 2:10)
Overcomer (Revelations 12:11)
Greatly Loved by God (Romans 1:7, Ephesians 2:4, Colossians 3:12, 1 Thesselonians 1:4)
Valued (Matthew 6:25-34)

And God doesn’t stop there.

Besides revealing who we really are in the Word, God also gives us His armor, shield, helmet & sword to protect us from these enemy attempts to cloak us in darkness.

We are not to be defined by our enemy’s reaction to who God says we are.

Who He designed us to be.

When Truth speaks, we need to claim it, proclaim it, and release it deep into our lives. Then we will begin to believe it, and let it become part of us.

Its time to remove the counterfeit labels off of your life, and let your true self shine.

Clothe yourselves in Him.
Let Him be your cover.

The One True Label Maker
is waiting to give you a new makeover.
And it will be a perfect fit.
