survivor, meet the Overcomer

Survivors are terrified of a reality they already innately know to be true: even if people did know, they wouldn’t do anything to help.

Kaeyley Trillis Haver, childhood rapper survivor

When we are under siege at a very young age, we can pick up partial truths and run with them:

It’s my fault my parents divorced.

I must have done something to deserve this.

I am unlovable.

No one will help me.

As my childhood molester told me, “No one will believe you, so you might as well keep it a secret anyways.”

So I did, until I came to know God.

Shortly after, in a counseling session which ended in being Sozo in style before I even knew what that was, God showed me where He had been in that scenario, then told me to tell my mother.

And I did, and she believed me.

Because molesters and rapists like to get you alone, we all believe that there is nothing any one would have done had they known what was going on, as the above quote from a survivor states.

I don’t fully accept that statement.

In the moment we may feel that is true. However, I believe there would be more of these incidents happening if Holy Spirit led people were not listening to His prompts to leave a situation, stay in pairs, step up and speak up, or not go when we sense we should stay home.

I also believe His angels protect and cover us from way more than we realize.

Although I didn’t know God at the time I was molested, the fact that He later showed me He had been there crying over me, and had prompted my brother to enter the room when he did proves to me God cares for me. And He moved to stop it from progressing further.

Soon after I became one of the Beloved, I was waiting for the subway train late one night on my way home from working an evening shift. I was listening to my Walkman, and wearing a backpack.

Just as the doors opened and I stepped on to the subway car, someone not on the train tried to pull me back onto the now empty platform by grabbing my backpack.

Within a split second of my face registering fear, a man within arms length inside the train grabbed me by the shoulders and yanked me forward so the doors could close.

He saved a perfect stranger from who knows what, and he didn’t have to but he stepped up and rescued me anyway.

Some times the truth is found somewhere between the lies we believe based on our experience and the vastly bigger reality God sees and moves in.

God in all His wisdom knows what we have come out of and what is coming ahead for us.

He doesn’t leave us how He found us to just survive our past any longer. God takes us gently by the hand, helps us to face our pain stored there, shows us the truth in a loving way, and guides us on into the wide open future ahead He has for us.

We are not left as just survivors in His Kingdom. God not only rebuilds and restores us, He bestows us with the ability to overcome through His Presence, power and strength.

When we are able to leave our pasts in the past as just part of the story which helps shape us but doesn’t dictate our storyline, we will no longer see ourselves as survivors.

.

We will know and be able to walk out the truth: we are overcomers in and through Him.

And we will know that for every person who won’t get involved to help when there is a need, there is One who always will.

He can’t help Himself, His very nature of love cannot help coming to our rescue. Every time we cry of to Him, and even those times He sees our need before we do.

May we leave our outdated pasts and mindsets fully in the past, and move with confidence into the freedom God has for us as He walks beside us into the wonders up ahead, Beloved!

PS. If you are in need of healing from something in your past, I have found God led counseling sessions very effective to help me step into the freedom I have in Him. Sozo is one such tool I have both experienced and learned about. If you would like to learn more, please visit http://bethelsozo.com/

Do you overcome your problems or do you let them overcome you?

image

Some people are overcome by problems. Others overcome problems. -Max Lucado

Which kind of people are you?

Do you sink down overcome when things get tough or do you rise to overcome?

Everything could overcome you if you let it, for this is an amazing world full of both wonder and wildness.

Full of people who can rub us the wrong way, situations which are designed to topple us by an almost unseen enemy, and full of the God of wonders – all at the same time.

Which are you allowing your focus to be fixed upon? The created or the Creator?

We can overcome anything when we know:

1. Who we are.

We are the Beloved of Christ. We are the apple of His eye, the delight of His heart, the Bride He longs for.  We are His family, the ones He free back Home, made whole and set on fire to share the wonder of our newness with the world around us.

2. Who to turn to.

The God of all Creation, over all things made and unseen, this God is not a hands off type being who rules without any consideration for anyone other than Himself.

All He does for His Beloved flows out of the love He has for her.

For you and for me.

He promises so many times in the Scriptures He is with us, becuase He knows how often we may need that reminder when the hard times come.

Because of Him, we can overcome.

The end of the story of humanity has already been recorded and written for all to read, learn and believe.

God wins, the enemy doesn’t.

God overcomes, forever and ever!

We too can overcome when we invite Him to battle for us.

It doesn’t matter what you are facing, but whose face you are focused upon….

You can look to yourself to overcome, but we all know deep down we are only able to handle so much on our own.

You can keep your eyes fixed on the enemy’s moves, and become overworked as you stand in fear.

Or you can fix your eyes on God’s loving face. Cry out to Him, the One who is able to do all things, make the miraculous happen in the blink of an eye, sends His angels to protect you, covers you in the blood of Jesus and indwells you by the Holy Presence of God Himself, Holy Spirit.

When we begin to feel overwhelmed, fall to your knees.
Not because you are admitting defeat, but to show the enemy you refuse to bend the knee to any other than God Himself.

Ask Him to invade the situation with all He has for you to make it through, not only to endure but to overcome in His strength.

Then stand in that strength, the strength of His might, and walk over and through those problems.

Because you know He’s got you covered.

And because He is with you, you will overcome.

If the waves seem too high today, the debt load crushing or the relationship too far gone for human intervention, He is waiting for you to welcome Him into your problems.

He delights, as any good father does, in helping His children, in showering blessings on His Beloved.

With Him at your side, you will overcome.

God is …invincible

image

We like to think of God like Superman….but He doesn’t have an Achilles heel or a weakness for kryptonite.

He is invincible.

When we walk with Him like David did, we can take down the giants we come to face in our lives.

Notice in 1 Samuel 17 that David mentions several instances where God helped him defeat lion(s) and bear(s).

Because it’s not only one instance where we will encounter situations beyond the norm, is it?!

David taped in to the strength beyond his own when He stood up against Goliath, and defeated him as God lead him to.

Because when we walk in obedience as He leads, He directs our weaponry to hit the intended mark.

For the battle truly belongs to the Lord, and He will never be defeated.

I have struggled for the past 24 hours with a very painful issue with my foot.

God reminded me that the plan He has for me will come to pass, and to not be discouraged as I wait for His lead.

He is with me.

His plans always come to fruition.

He wins the battle against evil.

Maybe you too needed to be reminded God is invincible.

He is in control and aware of all things.

He is the Master Craftsman, and is intimately familiar with our inner most beings.

Nothing, absolutely nothing happens that He is unaware of and trying to resolve for His best.

Absolutely all things are possible in, through and because of Him, for He is the Mighty, Holy, Majestic, Uncreated One.
Who was, is and is to come, forevermore.

Our Hero is not a human based superhero with human flaws and weaknesses.

He is, and will always be, invincible!!!

take courage

Unhappy people hurt people. If you find yourself belittled, diminished, or humiliated, take courage. It’s not about you!
-Brian Houston

Be strong. Take courage. Don’t be intimidated. Don’t give them a second thought because God, your God, is striding ahead of you. He’s right there with you. He won’t let you down; he won’t leave you.
Deuteronomy 31:6 MSG

Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.
Joshua 1:9 NIV

Immediately Jesus spoke to them, saying, “Take heart; it is I. Do not be afraid.” Matthew 14:27 ESV

I was reminded in the movie Cinderella that we are to take courage, to be courageous no matter what is occurring about us.

Courage is doing it afraid, regardless of your fear or what it is you are facing.

The Bible is full of men and women that God needed to remind to be courageous:
Moses
Joshua
Mary
the disciples

And many more who asked God for courage in hard situations:
Samson
David
Rack, Shack & Benny 🙂
even Jesus!

If the God who came down to rescue us at such great cost to Himself needed to ask His Father to help Him as He faced the cross, why do we feel we don’t need to?

Why do we let the situation be the one to dictate our response?

I recently decided I need to rebalance my work schedule, and have been phasing in to where it will hopefully land over the next few weeks, as I have three part time jobs.

God has led me to cut equally from all three, to make room for what He is calling me to, and for which I need more time with Him to prepare.

I have had a problem saying no to people over the years, but God has been equipping and empowering me to speak up when I need to say no, and not worry about what will happen if I am following His lead.

I am not responsible for other people’s expectations, behaviors or decisions (other than my children, who are almost fully grown). Each of us need to own our own choices, and take courage when others don’t like ours.

God continuously reminds me that He is with me, and He is more than enough to help me face whatever may come my way in His strength, confident in He who equips me.

I can have courage no matter what I am facing because of Him.

Feel like you too are facing the lions den when you need to say no? Take courage: The same God who shut down the lions’ appetites will keep you safe.

Feel like you are in the frying pan?
Take courage: The same God who showed up in the fiery furnace will be with you.

Feel like your needs outweigh your abilities?
Take courage: The same God who fed the 5000 men & their families from a few fish & loaves, the same God who clothes the wildflowers with magnificence will meet your needs.

God never changes.

We can have courage because we know the character of the One we follow.

This God who gave His all is a courageous love display for all earth & heaven to see? He has unlimited courage!

And He loves to answer our heart’s cry, like the loving Father and adoring Bridegroom He is!

Like our God, we were meant to be courageous.

Its time to stand up, and walk with courage into the day God has made and onto the path He has planned for us!

If you can’t be courageous any other way, than grab His hand and don’t afraid!
